Objectives

-Study of the advanced applications of the geographical information systems in the field of ecology.

-Description of the advanced GIS and remote sensing tools used in ecology, and their practical application.

Contents

1. Geographic data Management: Due to the geographical data its special characteristics (graphical and alphanumerical information) requires a special data handling. We’ll study the best procedures to store, treat and query the information. Basic data base management and SQL will be reviewd.

2. Interpolations. Assuming that all the filed data is taken in specific locations, in this module we'll study how to interpolate the filed data correctly to have a good coverage of the variable on the territory.

3. Spatial analysis. In this module we'll analyze the advanced geographic analysis techniques, for the territory (cost distances, decision support, etc).

4. Network analysis: On this module we'll analyse the tools for the study of ecological networks, identifying critical nodes, connectivity, etc.

5. Ecological modelling: We'll study the role of geographical information systems in ecological modelling, studding it's role in data preparation and modelling.

6. Geo-Statistics: This module will study the statistics methods that describe the geographic relationships between the variables of study.

7. Remote sensing: In this module we'll study the possibilities of using remote sensing data in ecology. We'll study crops identification, land use assessment,,, etc.

Minimum Requirements for attendance:

Medium-Basic level of GIS. Candidates might be fully capable to perform basic GIS analysis, and data treatment.

Software used:

GvSIG, IDRISI
