Responding to a request from the secretariat of the Council of Europe to the Berne Convention (on wildlife and natural habitats in Europe), the holder of the Chair Rui Nabeiro produced a report on Protected Areas and Climate Change.
The report, authored by Prof. Miguel Bastos Araújo and with the collaboration of Raquel Garcia, offers a diagnosis of the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity in protected areas (including Natura 2000 areas) in Europe. Based on the diagnosis are discussed adaptation strategies for biodiversity, particularly as regards the preservation in situ in protected areas and surrounding areas. Political and management mechanisms to face the challenges posed by climate change are also reviewed and discussed. .
